find your style

You may already know what you like or be drawn to a particulate style.  Or you may not know how to describe what appeals to you most.  There are no definite rules to design and styles, what is most important, is that you love it.  That said, here are some tried and true interior design 'styles' that you may relate to.

Traditional

Traditional styling often includes detail such as carved moldings, detailed woodwork, graceful lines, and sturdy crafted furniture. Sumptuous sofas and occassional chairs, soft accent pillows, framed wall decorations, elegant fabrics and sometimes antiques will be found in a traditional room.

Modern

A modern interior refers to a simple space that has clean straight lines, lacks clutter, neutral colour palettes with bold accent colours.  Often minimalistic with a 'less is more' philosophy without missing essential function.  Basic shapes and geometric pattern.  Functional lines and curves.  The use of materials like metal, chrome, and glass – and furnishings without decorative accent.

Industrial

Think Manhattan loft or warehouse, exposeed brick, concrete floors, copper piping, open shelving, , open spaces, steampunk,  lack of pretension and the visual appeal that lies within utilitarian surfaces, stripped-back architecture and salvaged objects. Mix old and new.  Reclaim and repurpose.  Neutrals and cool colours.  Architecture, function, salvaged wood, metal and stone.  Edgy art.

Coastal Beach

A style that comes to mind when you think “beach house.” Light and breezy, with a palette drawn from sand and shells as much as sea and sky.  Fabrics are simple, unassuming and put-your-feet-up comfy - linen slipcovers, cotton rugs, muslin curtains or floaty sheers.  Washed-out pastels or tailored stripes, natural fibres, weathered woods sometimes with a hint of beachy treasures.

Scandinavian

Characterized by simplicity, minimalism, functionality and comfort.  Minimal accessories.  The color palette is basic: whites, from ecru to bright white, beiges, natural light wood tones, and light blues  Fabrics plain, textured, sometimes white stripes, plaids, florals on a white background small, repeating designs.  Furniture combines straight lines with gentle curves.  Blonde woods: white pine, ash, and beech.

Midcentury Retro

Hello Mad Men. 1940's to the 70's.  Innovative mass-produced furniture and accents. Household-name artists and designers: George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen.  Andy Warhol pop art.  Make feature furniture and objects (replica or real) centerpieces. Warm earthy colours mixed with anything goes - teal, gold, plum, graphic patterns.

Farmhouse Country

Imagine the warmth of natural wood, soft colors, whitewashed walls, a fireplace, beamed ceilings, rustic trinkets, a relaxed interior.  Handmade or heirloom textiles and upholstery, mixed and matched for a comfortable, eclectic and lived-in feel.

Ethnic

The umbrella of 'Ethnic' covers many countries and cultures that have a distinct design signature. To name a few:  African (including Moroccan and Egyptian),  European (Provence, Mediterranean and Colonial),  Eastern (Chinese and Japanese)  and South American or Mexican.  If you are an avid traveller, you may gravitate to one of these.  Colors range from rich and vibrant to natural.  Indigenous textiles, furniture, lighting, flooring, souveniers and curios combine to give a polished look.

Period

This option encapsulates many different design styles that are driven by a specific period in history.  For example Victorian, Rennaisance, Baroque, Rococo, Georgian, Gothic, Art Deco, Shaker and Art Nouveau.  Many things influence such a specific style - furniture, colour, space, textiles, pattern and use.

Island Tropical

Picture a tropical paradise - Raffles, Bali, Hawaii, Cape Cod, the Carribean.  Find balance between nature based colours and boldly colorful prints, banana leaves, cane .  Textural weaves, natural fibers of the tropics, are anything but dainty. Think cane, rattan, wicker, bamboo, sea grass and jute.  Tropical woods - mahogany and teak.  Ceiling fans, potted palms, tropical flowers, pineapples and a touch of animal print.

Eclectic

A mixture of textures, time periods, styles, trends, and colors. This is a style that lets you show who you are, show off things you love without strict no-no's.  However, total composition won't look like a mess if you do apply some rules i.e. repetition, restraint, have a colour palette in mind, ground key pieces. This is a tricky one but it can work well.

Shabby Chic

This is typically where where furniture and furnishings are chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. Time-worn pastel colors with antique furniture and feminine-type floral designs with lace, often with a french nod.
